DENVER -- Three second-period goals pushed Denver up 3-1 over Minnesota Duluth after 40 minutes tonight in a WCHA men's hockey game at Magness Arena.

The teams broke open a scoreless game with three goals in the first seven minutes of the second period.

A power play for Denver, which came into the game 2-of-24 on power plays, clicked on the first try. Winger Brock Trotter converted at the left edge of the crease on a Kyle Ostrow cross-ice feed at 1:59. UMD answered 42 seconds later as center Jordan Fulton finished a 2-on-0 break by snapping the puck in off the crossbar.

Then the Pioneers took control. Just after goalie Peter Mannino had an excellent save on UMD'?s Matt McKnight, Denver came in 3-on-1 for an Anthony Maiani goal. UMD goalie Alex Stalock stopped Ostrow with 8:21 left in the second period, but the rebound pinballed in front and the puck caromed off UMD defenseman Travis Gawryletz and into UMD?'s net.

Denver led 20-11 in shots on goal through two periods.
