UMD will be well represented at the 2000 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in North Carolina on Thursday. Three Bulldog athletes, Katie Huntley, Lori Schmidt and Erik Hanson, will be looking to bring home national accolades once again as they make their first, second and third trips to outdoor nationals, respectively.
For seniors Huntley and Schmidt, the competition will be bittersweet as this weekend marks the end of their record-breaking college running careers.
"Monday was our last speed workout, and we realized we'll never have to run another," said Huntley. "But it won't really sink in until it's all over."
Huntley will be running on Friday night in the 3,000-meter event, which she finished with a time of 9:52.05 at this season's Drake Relays. That time was the fifth fastest recorded in the 3,000 meters by any NCAA Division II runner in the nation this year.
"I'm hoping for the top eight, but the top six would be nice," said Huntley. "I really want to go down there and do well."
So does Schmidt, who will be running in the 800 meters at nationals for the second-straight year.
"Lori (Schmidt) and I went to nationals last year in indoor, and we felt like we were so young," said Huntley. "Now we feel more confident. I'm hoping this time around that we can run confident and really do well.
"Knowing that it's our last race ever ... Hopefully that will make us run crazy."
Hanson, the lone Bulldog men's representative at the competition, will also be running on Friday night in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash, an event in which he was clocked at 47.24 seconds during the NSIC Championships.
