The body of a 67-year-old man was recovered from a Carlton County lake on Thursday after he apparently fell into the water while canoeing and drowned.

The Carlton County Sheriff's Office reported that it received a call at 6:19 p.m. Thursday reporting that the man - who was from Eden Prairie, Minn., but was visiting family property in the Bob Lake area of Sawyer Township - "hadn't been in contact with his family for a period of time."

A family friend went to check on the man and found a partially submerged canoe on Bob Lake about 40 feet from a dock, with the missing man's dog in the canoe, the sheriff's office reported.

Carlton County sheriff's deputies were able to reach the canoe and retrieve the uninjured dog, but could not locate the missing man.

The St. Louis County Rescue Squad responded with underwater search equipment and located the body of the man in the lake. The man's name has not been released pending notification of family members.
