I was headed north of Duluth in a small plane last month when I spotted these ice shacks below on an arm of Island Lake. Clustered together, they looked like a small and colorful polar village from the air. I opened the window, shot a few pictures and then nearly froze my fingers clasping the window shut again. The air temperature was 10 below zero with “100 mph” winds as we sped northward to the train wreck. (Bob King / rking@duluthnews.com)
