Bicycle riders from around the area are invited to join Duluth Mayor Emily Larson in front of City Hall at noon Friday (May 12) for the sixth annual Mayor’s Bike Ride.
The ride will culminate with a luncheon at The Encounter Youth Center, where Larson is slated to deliver what’s been dubbed her “State of Bicycling in Duluth” address.
Also speaking at the event will be Jason Hall, who co-founded Slow Roll Detroit five years ago with Mike MacKool, after both of the men were laid off. Rather than despair, the two decided to organize a weekly community bike to connect with neighbors and demonstrate their city’s resilience in the face of adversity. The ride started with a few people but now attracts thousands of bicyclists each week.
During his visit, in the spirit of the Detroit event, Hall will lead Slow Roll Duluth, with bicyclists starting a ride at 3 p.m. Saturday at Michigan Street and 21st Avenue West. Riders will take in some of the recent positive developments in Duluth’s Lincoln Park neighborhood as they roll through the Lincoln Park Craft Business District and check out the new Cross-City Trail.
