It's that time of year when Merv Griffin's Duluth-themed "Christmas City Song" gets lodged in your head for more than a month. The Christmas City of the North parade begins at 6:15 p.m. Friday, with marching bands, dancers, floats, fire trucks and animals parading from behind the KBJR studios in Canal Park to Railroad Street and Lake Avenue, then west on Superior Street and ending at Fifth Avenue West. It's the 50th anniversary of the parade, which has gone off all but once since 1958. The free event also is broadcast live by Northland's NewsCenter on Channel 6. Downtown businesses will create an additional festive touch, unveiling the holiday window decorations that have been hidden behind red curtains.
