BEMIDJI, Minn. - A Bemidji man has been charged with embezzling more than $200,000 from his former employer.
Thomas Kaplan, 60, of Bemidji, was charged Monday in Beltrami County District Court with one count of felony theft over $35,000, according to a release from Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin.
According to the release, Kaplan was employed at American Garage Door Supply Co. of Bemidji. Local police and FBI agents were alerted to financial discrepencies at the business in January 2014. After an extensive investigation, the release said, law enforcement discovered fraudulent business transactions dating back to 2007 in which police say Kaplan was channeling business funds into a personal merchant account.
If convicted, Kaplan could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
