A bear that bit a Superior man in the arm and legs on Oct. 8 did not have rabies, according to the Douglas County Department of Health and Human Services, which tested the bear.

Superior police said they found Charlie Lehman nursing bite wounds near Old Highway 105 and Pokegama Road. He said he was attacked by the bear after trying to scare it off from his hunting bait. Lehman's girlfriend, Tiffany Mallow, said she shot the bear in the lungs and Lehman stabbed it with its pocket knife. When Lehman checked to see if the bear was dead, the bear bit him in the leg and retreated into the woods.

An investigation continues into the incident, said John Krull, game warden for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

He declined to provide more information about the investigation.

"Hopefully it won't be too much longer," Krull said.

Krull and another DNR officer have told the News Tribune that the bear's behavior in the incident seemed unusual.
