Apostle Islands National Lakeshore officials have closed a portion of Oak Island because of concerns about increased bear activity in the area.

The temporary closure to all use, effective Friday, is in place for the northeast portion of Oak Island, including Campsite 6.

"One resident bear is frequenting the area and has exhibited behavior that indicates it is not afraid of humans. To the knowledge of park rangers, this bear has not gotten human food - yet. The help of visitors is needed to make sure that no food is left unattended," park officials said in a news release.

Any bear activity in the park should be reported immediately to headquarters at (715) 779-3398, ext. 122.

The closure on Oak Island will be re-evaluated at least weekly, park officials said. When it appears that the bear will stay away from visitor areas, the closed portion of the island will be reopened.
