GENOLA, Minn. — A man injured by a police beanbag round remained hospitalized Wednesday, May 29, while the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension looks into the use of force by a Morrison County deputy.
On May 22, law enforcement was called to a report of a domestic assault involving a knife at a residence near Genola, about 30 miles south of Brainerd. Deputies found a man whose vehicle had become stuck in a field about six miles west of Genola, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said. After a brief standoff, a sheriff’s deputy fired a bean bag round, striking the man.
On Wednesday, the Department of Public Safety identified the deputy as Bill Vanden Avond, an 11-year officer who has worked with Morrison County for the past four years. Robert Allen Anderson, 44, of Motley, was treated at the scene and remains hospitalized at Hennepin Healthcare in the Twin Cities for a serious wound, the DPS said.
The BCA said it is investigating the shooting at the request of the sheriff’s office.
There is no body camera video of the shooting and BCA agents are determining if there is squad car video available. A Minnesota state trooper and a Department of Natural Resources officer were at the shooting, the BCA said.
