Bayfield's Lori Schneider and her climbing companions reached Camp 4 on Mount Everest today -- 3,000 feet below the mountain's 29,035-foot-high summit -- according to an e-mail update from her climbing team.
"We're going to take a rest day [Friday]," Jeffrey James Justman wrote on the Alpine Ascents International Web site. "The weather is good. Please knock on wood, say a prayer, keep your fingers crossed for continued good weather, and in a couple more days we should have this thing done and be on our way down."
Alpine Ascents is guiding Schneider and several other climbers on Everest.
Schneider, 55, is a former teacher who retired after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999. She's climbing the highest peaks on seven continents with an "empowerment through adventure" message. She already has completed climbs of the highest peaks on six other continents.
