A 25-year-old man was rescued Sunday after his canoe tipped over in the St. Louis River near Scanlon.

The Carlton County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call just after 2:30 p.m. from a man who said his canoe had flipped, and that he was wearing a life jacket and holding onto a rock in the river, according to a sheriff's office news release.

Authorities located the man using GPS coordinates from his cellphone, and found him on a rock in a part of the river where access was difficult. With assistance from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Minnesota State Patrol, St. Louis County Rescue Squad and LifeLink III Helicopter, the man was rescued around 4:41 p.m. and transported by Cloquet Area District Ambulance to a local hospital.

The Sheriff's Office did not release the man's name or any details regarding his condition.
