Life goes on after high school, but it goes on without an A.V. squad, DECA conferences and band camp. Grownup geeks in Duluth, however, do have one gathering where they may celebrate their clumsy social skills and obsessive-compulsive behavior. It's called "Geek Prom."
This year's Geek Prom will be the first of its kind. The night will be filled with awkward romance, video gaming, cheesy music and spastic fits of clumsy dancing. Those who were too geeky in their youth to attend their high school prom will find themselves warmly accepted. Those who were too cool to properly enjoy their high-school prom will find this night an occasion to let their inner geek out.
Geek Prom will be held on April 13 at 8 p.m. at the Norshor Theatre in Duluth's Old Downtown. Three sponsoring restaurants -- Pizza Luce, Fitger's Brewhouse and Lake Avenue Cafe -- will be offering pre-prom dinner specials, and a limousine will shuttle geeks from the restaurants to the event. Celebrity geeks will be on hand, and a grand march and crowning of King and Queen Geek will highlight the festivities.
An announcement will be made soon about the musical lineup for the show.
Promoters are promising the headline act will be a heavy-hitter on the nerd scene, perhaps even with Dr. Demento Show credentials.
Tickets will go on sale March 15 at the Electric Fetus and the Norshor Theatre. Cost will be $8 in advance, $10 the night of the show.
There is no discount for couples; geeks who can find a date should consider themselves lucky and pay full price for a second ticket.
Those who go to Geek Prom should plan on wearing something festive: bright pink formal wear, skin-tight superhero gear, kilts, Martian suits -- anything geeky will do. The Duluth Ragstock is serving as Geek Prom's apparel sponsor. The store is ordering many leisure suits and gaudy dresses for the occasion.
