St. Scholastica

Coach: Dana Moore, 11th season

2006 record: 21-14 overall, 9-5 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference

First match: 6 p.m. Aug. 31 vs. Wisconsin-Oshkosh, at Elmhurst (Ill.) tournament

Outlook: The Saints go into the season looking to build momentum after overcoming late-season injuries to win the UMAC conference tournament last season. St. Scholastica lost only one starter from last season in LeAnn Berscheit, but returns her junior sister, Kati, who earned all-UMAC honorable mention honors in her first year as the Saints' setter.

Also back is the team-leader in kills in junior Shawna Varichak, as well as first-team All-UMAC libero selection Diana Moody. Varichak and Moody were prep teammates at Hibbing. Moody and Alissa Johnson, the only seniors on the roster, will serve as captains.

Moore said the UMAC won't have an automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III postseason until 2009 or '10, meaning the Saints would need to play almost flawless volleyball during the nonconference portion of their schedule to make the tournament as an independent.

"Knowing that our conference season is the be-all and end-all, we make that our focus. I think we can win it, absolutely," Moore said. "This team is really well-connected and plays with a lot of heart and enthusiasm, and when a team works that hard, you want to see them achieve a good end result."
