A 16-year-old Ashland High School student died Friday morning when the car he was driving crashed into the rear of a school bus that had slowed to make a left turn.
The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the scene on State Highway 112 about two miles south of Ashland at 7:45 a.m.
Officers, firefighters and paramedics from several agencies responded, but the teenager was declared dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until family is notified.
Ashland County Sheriff Michael Brennan told the News Tribune that ”excessive speed’’ appeared to be a contributing factor in the accident.
The bus was carrying 18 students. Two of the students on the bus were transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Ashland after reporting minor neck pain and the remaining 16 passengers were taken by bus to the hospital for evaluation, but none of the students was seriously injured.
“They all walked off by themselves and they are all okay,’’ Brennan said.
The crash is under investigation by the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office and a full scene reconstruction was underway by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
