Ashland Mayor Bill Whalen gets to keep his job after winning a recall election on Tuesday.

The election drew about 1,550 voters to the polls, with Whalen getting about half the votes. The rest of the votes were spread among four other candidates.

Tuesday's election resulted after a group called Citizens to Recall Whalen started a petition stating Whalen neglects his duties as mayor.

Whalen told the Northland's NewsCenter that he believed the recall process is vital to democracy, but didn't want to give up his position.
