Art exhibit opens at Tweed
Juan Logan explores racial injustice with paintings that examine the "Mammy" icon and blurs gender lines with sculpture.
The assistant chairman of the art department at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill opens an exhibit Tuesday in UMD's Tweed Museum of Art. "Juan Logan: The Third Place Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, 1996-2006" continues through March 4.
Logan's work is derived from the legends and rituals of African-American life and his experience as a man coming of age in the rural Southeast. His art has been featured in more than 250 solo and group exhibitions and is included in collections at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Logan presents a free slide lecture on his work at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and a reception follows.
