A fire that gutted the inside of the Midway Town Hall on Sunday may have been an arson.

"There's evidence that this may have been deliberately set," said Midway Township supervisor Jim Aird.

A case of soda, an office table, a cell phone and tire tracks were found behind the building, and a sign in front of the building appeared to be knocked down by a car, Aird said.

Hermantown Fire Chief John Benson said the fire started in the kitchen, causing extensive smoke and fire damage to the inside. He said the structure was not damaged and no one was hurt.

"It's a considerable loss," Benson said. "They'll have to remodel the inside."

The building is used for town meetings and occasional fundraisers and was to be used for a pancake breakfast next Saturday to raise money for the city's ambulance equipment, Aird said.
