An arrow-shaped band of lake-effect snow that had been aimed at the North Shore much of the day now is focused on Duluth and areas just inland where several more inches could fall this evening.

The same system brought up to 15 inches of new snow today to parts of the North Shore and inland Lake County as easterly winds picked up moisture over Lake Superior and dropped it on land.

Now those winds have switched to the Northeast, and the National Weather Service in Duluth said Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor, Cloquet and areas as far inland as Floodwood could see another 3-6 inches before snow tapers off after 8 p.m. tonight.

The snowfall will vary greatly over just a few miles, from near sunshine in some areas to whiteout conditions in others.

Winds later tonight will shift out of the North and spur lake-effect snowfall along Wisconsin's South Shore into Tuesday.

Meanwhile other parts of Minnesota saw a more traditional snowfall today with 4-6 inches common across the southern and central areas of the state.
