An 83-year-old passenger who was a guest aboard the Paul R. Tregurtha was airlifted from the laker Tuesday morning after experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath.

The U.S. Coast Guard used an HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter to transport the man from the Tregurtha to a waiting ambulance at the Houghton (Mich.) Airport. The Tregurtha was on Lake Superior about 30 miles northeast of the Apostle Islands at the time of the airlift, about 9 a.m.

The Coast Guard identified the man as John Hughes but was unable to provide a hometown.

Hughes was taken to the Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center and was transferred to Marquette General Hospital, where he was admitted. No information on his condition was available Tuesday afternoon.
