Duluth officials announced plans today to do $2 million worth of painting and structural rehabilitation work on the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge, beginning Thursday and ending by June 30, 2009.
The majority of the work will occur over the two winters, while the bridge is down from Jan. 20 through March 22.
This work requires that the bridge will be restricted to one lane during the winter. Signal lights will be put up at each end of the bridge. In addition, intermittent bridge closures will be required, not lasting more than 15 minutes at one time.
The work will involve repainting large portions of the bridge and repairing deteriorated concrete and structural steel. The underside and lower parts of the bridge were repainted in 2000.
Areas to be repainted will be totally enclosed, allowing paint to be easily collected.

A similar lift closure period and painting operation will likely be needed over the winter in 2009 as well.
