An accounting firm has been selected to review the now-closed Minnesota Discovery Center's financial records, an audit that is expected to take a month, according to a news release from Iron Range Resources.
The Chisholm-based museum closed indefinitely on Nov. 20, and 26 full-time employees were laid off. There was not enough money to cover day-to-day operations and payroll, Rich Puhek, who leads the center's board of directors, told the News Tribune in November.
Iron Range Resources has secured the site and is making sure the historical collections are preserved.
Sandy Layman, Iron Range Resources commissioner, is expected to request an amendment to the agency's fiscal year 2010 budget that would provide a loan to Ironworld Development Corp. to pay outstanding claims and accounts. IDC is a nonprofit that operates Minnesota Discovery Center under an agreement with Iron Range Resources.
