A 30-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash north of Duluth on Sunday.

After receiving a report of a severely damaged vehicle in a ditch near the 5400 block of Jean Duluth Road, deputies from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office discovered the body of the car's lone occupant, Anthony Louis Makela III, inside just before 9:30 a.m.

Investigators determined the car was traveling north on the road before going into the ditch. "The vehicle struck a driveway embankment, became airborne and struck two trees approximately 15 feet off the ground before coming to a rest on the roof," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Makela was hired as an assistant coach for Lake Superior College's men's soccer team before their 2019 season. That season, he helped guide the IceHawks to the NJCAA Regional Playoffs.

LSC shared in a statement that they're mourning the loss of a coach. Makela was actively reaching out to student-athletes to ensure they were engaged in school and staying physically active — even though their season was postponed.

"We lost not only a coach, but a friend and mentor to our student-athletes," head coach Anthony Wood said in a statement.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and the Midwest Medical Examiners Office will continue to investigate the crash.

The Lakewood Fire Department and St. Louis County Rescue Squad also responded to the scene.
