St. Louis County sheriff's deputies responded to three water emergency calls throughout the county on July 4 according to a news release.
The first call came in at approximately noon for a 47-year-old man injured by a tow rope while water tubing behind a boat on Bassett Lake in Bassett Township. The man was transported by a private vehicle to a Duluth-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. a 65-year-old man was found unresponsive in the water in Bear Island Lake near Babbitt after attempting to swim after a floating object in the water. Several people performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene and he was transported by Babbitt Ambulance to an Ely-area hospital. He was conscious and alert at the time of transportation, authorities said.
Later at 2 p.m. a 69-year-old man was reported as unresponsive in Pelican Lake near Orr after he jumped off a pontoon boat. Resuscitation was performed by fellow passengers and he was conscious and alert when medical response arrived at the scene. He was taken via Orr Ambulance to the Cook Hospital. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Virginia Ambulance also assisted.
