A portion of U.S. Highway 2 in Superior was closed for a time Tuesday after a pickup truck struck a residence and caused a natural gas leak.
Crews from the Superior Fire Department were dispatched to the 4000 block of East Second Street (Highway 2) just before 5 p.m. and found a Chevrolet pickup truck had struck a multi-unit residence. The building was significantly damaged, and natural gas was leaking into the residences, according to a news release from Battalion Chief Camron Vollbrecht.
Fire crews shut down Highway 2, evacuated a half-block area around the building and provided medical assistance to the truck's driver. Personnel from Superior Water, Light & Power shut down the gas line, and fire officials ventilated the building until gas levels were at safe limits, Vollbrecht said in the release. Highway 2 was then reopened.
The truck's driver suffered minor injuries. No one inside the residence was harmed, though five occupants have been displaced. The incident remains under investigation.
