A tree-service worker was killed in a fall from a roof in northern St. Louis County on Tuesday, authorities said.
Hans Christopher Smith, 55, was working to clear branches from a downed tree on a residence at 1415 Walsh Road in Eagles Nest Township when he lost his footing and fell approximately 20 feet, landing on a propane tank below, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred just before 5 p.m.
Smith was unconscious when first responders arrived, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause is believed to be accidental, with no foul play suspected.
The residence is located about 10 miles east of Tower-Soudan and 15 miles west of Ely. Intense storms had moved through the area in the mid-afternoon, creating some flooding issues, knocking down trees and leading to power outages for a period of time.
