Two semis jackknifed Wednesday afternoon causing a mess on U.S. Highway 53 in New Independence Township.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2003 Peterbilt semi was traveling southbound on Highway 53 south of Shipley Road when it jackknifed into the ditch during whiteout conditions. A 2005 Lexus then struck the semi on the broadside of its trailer.
Another semi, a 2016 Volvo, went into the opposing ditch to avoid the crash and in the process struck the rear of the Peterbilt’s trailer. A 2017 Subaru then hit the Peterbilt’s trailer that was sticking into a traffic lane after swerving around the Lexus. The Lexus driver, Michael Acheson, of Cloquet, and the passenger, Olivia Warpula, of Grand Rapids, were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth with non-life-threatening injuries.
The road conditions were reported as snowy and ice-covered. Assisting at the scene included St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Gold Cross Ambulance, St. Louis County Rescue Squad and Alborn Fire Department.
