A retired Duluth police officer remained in critical condition at an Illinois hospital Monday, nearly a week after suffering serious injuries when his motorcycle was struck by an ambulance.

Chris Boerner, 67, of Culver, is being treated at the OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria following the Sept. 18 crash on Interstate 39 near Oglesby, Ill.

According to Illinois State Police, Boerner was ejected from his 2012 Harley Davidson when he was rear-ended by the ambulance around 2:15 a.m. He was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to the Peoria facility.

The ambulance driver, 55-year-old Wayne Christensen, told investigators that he saw the distance between his vehicle and the motorcycle “quickly closing” and hit the brakes but was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision, according to the State Police. The ambulance did not contain any patients and no other injuries were reported.

Christensen was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
