The 18-year-old man who drowned in an Ely lake on Monday afternoon has been identified.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that Sean Westly Giles Jr. of Detroit was swimming with a group of friends near a boat landing on the north side of Miners Lake when he disappeared under the water at about 3:50 p.m. Monday. The St. Louis County Rescue Squad located him about 20 minutes later and pulled him to shore, where lifesaving measures were started. He was transported to the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital, where he was declared dead, according to the sheriff’s office.
