  • About 50 Carlton County residents attended a hearing last night in Moose Lake on the state's planned acquisition of land to build a recreational trail in the county. The plan calls for the trail to be built on an abandoned railroad right-of-way.
  • Nine men representing Duluth's Midwest Challenge have reached West Memphis, Arkansas, in their attempt to set the world speed record for canoeing the length of the Mississippi River. The attempt is a fundraiser for Midwest Challenge, a Christian-oriented drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility.

  • Salaried employees of Potlatch Corp. are learning their fate this week as the company begins the slow and painful process of implementing staff cutbacks. In an effort to lower costs, Potlatch has re-evaluated every salaried position, from managers to salespeople.
  • Superior city councilors must decide tonight whether to be part of the joint law enforcement/health and human services complex Douglas County plans to build behind its courthouse. The County Board will vote tomorrow on seeking bids for the first phase of construction.
