  • If the weather cooperates, the St. Lawrence Seaway will open on March 24, the earliest in its 21-year history, a Canadian official said yesterday. April 1 has been the traditional opening date, with the earliest opening recorded on March 25, 1975.
  • For now, left wing Phil Verchota will not be joining six of his U.S. Olympic hockey teammates in the National Hockey League but will instead return to the University of Minnesota. Verchota said he's considering a career in business or maybe going to law school.

  • Minnesota Department of Natural Resources firefighters predict the 2000 fire season will start earlier than usual. There is virtually no fire-buffering snow anywhere in Minnesota or across much of Wisconsin, so fires are expected be developing soon across the region.
  • The March issue of Skyworld will be the last for the 17-year-old downtown Duluth specialty newspaper, its publisher announced yesterday. Meanwhile, the Ripsaw, another free tabloid, revealed plans to increase its publishing frequency by becoming a weekly beginning April 5.
