  • More than 700 members of Electrical Utilities Workers Union Local 31 were poised to strike Minnesota Power & Light Co. and Superior Water, Light & Power Co. at 12:01 a.m. today. A 4 1/2 hour negotiation session yesterday ended without any progress.
  • Vice President Walter Mondale skied at Duluth's Spirit Mountain yesterday while taking a break from election campaign activities on behalf of President Carter. Mondale skied with several Duluthians, including his weekend host Harry Munger and Munger's daughter Ann.

  • Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin yesterday asked state lawmakers to fund two new buildings at UMD. Speaking to the higher education committees of the House and Senate, Martin requested funding for a $6.1 million music performance laboratory and a $10.4 million ice hockey sports center.
  • The Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra announced yesterday that Director Yong-Yan Hu will be leaving at the end of June when his contract expires. Hu, a native of Shanghai, has been named music director of the Shanghai Broadcast Symphony Orchestra.
