  • The picket line at Conoco's Wrenshall refinery, part of the national strike by the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union, was quiet over the past weekend. Earlier in the week, two strikers were arrested and charged with criminal damage to property.
  • David A. Martin has been hired as director of the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission, subject to approval by the board of directors. Martin would succeed Rudy Esala, director of the commission for 12 years, from its founding until his resignation last June 1.

  • The life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be honored with several events in Duluth this weekend, culminating Monday with a march and rally. The march will leave the Washington Center at 11:30 a.m. and end at the DECC.
  • Wheelchair-bound residents took a record 3,026 trips on Duluth Transit Authority buses in 1999. In June of last year, the DTA achieved a 100 percent wheelchair-accessible fleet to bring it into total compliance with the 1991 Americans with Disabilities Act.
