  • Grand Rapids native Jim Maki, a 1976 Olympic ski jumper who returned from two years of semi-retirement this year, captured the first day of 90-meter U.S. Olympic trials yesterday in Lake Placid, New York. Jim Grahek of Ely was second.
  • Thirty-eight skiers neared the end of their 10-day trip across northern Minnesota yesterday, favored with temperatures in the low 20s. The trip is a training exercise for ten of the skiers who are planning an expedition across the Greenland ice cap next summer.

  • The 2000 Duluth City Council is working on filling the vacant 4th District seat. Although councilors aren't scheduled to officially vote until next week, they will interview five candidates and try to reach consensus tonight at a committee of the whole meeting.
  • Duluth Mayor Gary Doty has received 45 applications for the city's administrative assistant position and has narrowed the list to 15 contenders. This week, Doty will interview four of the finalists for the job, which pays an annual salary of $88,068.
