A small crew used an excavator to tear down the remains of the Adas Israel Congregation Synagogue Sunday afternoon.
Heavy-equipment operator and owner of Construction Services, Inc. Dale Cich of Duluth remarked, "It is a perfect day to do this. It is quiet in the neighborhood, there is no wind and the snow helps keep the dust down." Cich said that it will take about a week for trucks to haul the remains of the building away from the site on the corner of Third Street and North Third Avenue East.
The 118-year-old synagogue was destroyed Sept. 9 by a fire started by a homeless man, Matthew James Amiot, who was attempting to stay warm near the building. Amiot was sentenced last month to a year in prison for starting a negligent fire.
