  • The University of Wisconsin-Superior would become the site of a Wisconsin State Maritime Academy to train Great Lakes officers under a plan unveiled yesterday. A shortage of deck and engine officers on Great Lakes vessels is anticipated in the next decade.
  • Representatives of Duluth Goodwill Industries Vocational Enterprises said yesterday they plan to move into the old Goldfine's building on Garfield Avenue in February. The organization was formed earlier this year from the merger of Goodwill Industries and the Duluth Sheltered Workshop.

  • With newly elected state Rep. Dale Swapinski officially off the Duluth City Council, councilors last night discussed filling his 4th District seat. One question is whether Swapinski's successor should be appointed by the current council or the newly elected one that takes office in January.
  • Filmmakers scouting locations for "Claus," a supernatural Christmas story, will visit Duluth this week. Riki McManus of the Upper Minnesota Film Office said most of the scenes will involve snow and that filmmakers will be scouting neighborhoods, hospitals, forests, and the downtown area.
