Shawn Krizaj was officially sworn in as Duluth's new fire chief Friday evening at the Depot.

Krizaj has been with the Duluth Fire Department for almost 22 years and has served as firefighter, fire equipment operator, captain, technical services coordinator and deputy chief.

The Duluth City Council voted to appoint Krizaj to the position on Aug. 23 following the city's search for a new chief beginning in June.

Krizaj replaces Dennis Edwards Jr., who was demoted to assistant fire chief after pleading guilty to third-degree driving while impaired.

The fire department includes eight fire stations and more than 140 employees.

A pinning ceremony was also held Friday evening for 26 members of the fire department who were promoted or completed their initial firefighter probationary period.
