Minnesota Pollution Control Agency officials said yesterday they suspect the land surrounding U.S. Steel's Morgan Park plant may be contaminated with oil. They said oil has accumulated in the ground near the plant over several years and may also be polluting the groundwater.

Duluth may sell its vintage 1902 Carnegie Library once the public library moves into new quarters in November. Mayor Robert Beaudin said the city does not wish to keep the old library building since its maintenance and repair costs are high.

Former Duluth Mayor and News Tribune reporter George D. Johnson died this weekend at St. Mary's Hospice in Duluth. Johnson, 82, served as mayor from 1953 to 1956 and then again in 1962 when he was appointed on the death of Mayor Clifford Mork.

Edison Charter School administrators find out tonight whether Duluth School Board members will give them permission to lease the former Washburn Elementary School from a local church. Edison officials hope to increase their chances by limiting the school's enrollment to 800 students next year.
