Barker's Island in Superior now has a beer named after it. Barker's Island Four Seasons Beer is the brainchild of Jerry Jaques of Superior, who is developing a motel and convention center on the island and is using the beer to publicize the project.

Walleye fishing on the St. Louis River just below the Fond du Lac Dam has been particularly good this year. And because of the pollution abatement projects in the harbor, this year the fish can be eaten.

Tentative plans call for the Leif Erikson Viking Ship to be moved next winter to a permanent home on the eastern end of Leif Erikson Park. The move would end a long odyssey that has seen the ship go from rotting to restored.

Mary S. Lewerenz, president of the Women's Institute of Duluth and the University for Seniors at UMD, was named 1999 Woman of the Year at yesterday's Port Cities Luncheon. Lewerenz has also volunteered, among other places, at Glensheen and St. Mary's Medical Center.
