Duluth's first oceangoing vessel this season arrived last night and anchored two miles off the ship canal. The Liberian-registered freighter West River, which encountered windrows of ice as high as 15 feet on its trip through Lake Superior, will enter the harbor today.
Alberta Gas Chemicals Inc. of Duluth has requested permission from the MPCA to continue discharging wastewater into the St. Louis River for two years. The request involves daily discharges of 613,500 gallons of cooling water and 504,000 gallons of barometric condenser water.

John Brinzo, president of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., said yesterday production cutbacks at Northeastern Minnesota taconite plants are possible before the end of the year. The cutbacks would follow reductions that have already slowed taconite pellet production on the Iron Range.
The Duluth Entertainment Convention Center will break ground next week on its 600-car parking ramp. The structure will cover the section of the DECC's existing parking lot adjacent to Railroad Street and just west of the skywalk that connects the facility to downtown Duluth.
