The Duluth School Board voted 5-4 yesterday to close Ensign School, 1013 Piedmont Ave., after summer vacation begins June 8. Ensign PTA members said they will speak to a lawyer about possible legal action to keep their school open.
Minnesota Power & Light Co. has been ordered to refund more than half of the rate increase it began collecting from its 90,000 customers last July. Customers will get a 15 percent refund, an average of $4.50 to $6, on their monthly bills.

A recent University of Minnesota survey found that many Twin Cities residents would move to Northeastern Minnesota if they could find jobs with the same pay. But wages in Duluth are from 23 to 33 percent lower than they are in Minneapolis.
Iron Range school enrollments are plummeting in nearly every district, causing school officials to face tough decisions on closing schools. School closings are especially hard on the Range because many of the school buildings also serve as social hubs in smaller communities.
