1. PAUL  - Every two years, the Metropolitan Council distributes roughly $200 million in federal funding to municipalities and local authorities to support regional transportation needs.

The “Regional Solicitation” can be a make-it or break-it process for road projects and transit initiatives, some of which depend on the regional planning agency for the majority of their funding.

Here’s a selection of the 57 projects recently funded, including their overall costs.

The city of St. Paul will receive $5.3 million for the Capital City Bikeway along downtown Kellogg Boulevard. Overall cost: $6.6 million.

St. Paul will receive $4 million to partner with HOURCAR on an all-electric car-sharing system spanning 35 square miles. Overall cost: $10.7 million.

St. Paul will receive $843,000 for “Safe Routes to School” pedestrian improvements by the Bruce Vento Elementary School. Overall cost: $1 million.

Ramsey County will receive $1.54 million for the realignment of a section of Lexington Parkway in St. Paul between Shepard Road and West Seventh Street. Overall cost: $1.9 million.

St. Paul will receive $1.47 million for improvements to signalized intersections throughout the West Side, including audible pedestrian push buttons, traffic cameras and flashing yellow arrows. Overall cost: $1.8 million.

St. Paul will receive $2.2 million to stabilize, reconstruct and reopen the Fish Hatchery Trail into downtown St. Paul, a popular 1.4-mile bike trail along U.S. 61 that was closed in 2016 due to erosion. Overall cost: $2.77 million.

Metro Transit will receive $7 million for a bus stop modernization project along Lake Street in Minneapolis and Marshall Avenue in St. Paul, including bus bump-outs and modern shelters that provide heat, light and real-time travel information. Overall cost: $8.75 million.

Metro Transit will receive $3.6 million for a major frequency expansion of Route 68, which travels down Robert Street in St. Paul to West St. Paul and South St. Paul. Overall cost: $4.5 million.

The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority will receive $2.74 million for an Orange Line connector bus, adding weekday service for the Burnsville Transit Station. Overall cost: $3.34 million.

Apple Valley will receive $200,000 for “Safe Routes to School” pedestrian improvements by the Greenleaf Elementary School and Galaxie Crossing. Overall cost: $248,000.

Dakota County will receive $7 million for an expansion of Lone Oak Road/70th Street West in Eagan and Inver Grove Heights. Overall cost: $16.8 million.

Dakota County will receive $7 million for the expansion of County Road 70 in Lakeville. Overall cost: $17.5 million.

Dakota County will receive $2.6 million for a highway ramp improvement project along Cliff Road at Interstate 35W South in Burnsville. Overall cost: $3.3 million.

Dakota County will receive $1.44 million for an improvement project along County Road 38 in Apple Valley and Burnsville. Overall cost: $1.8 million.

Dakota County will receive $3.5 million for the Minnesota River Greenway project in Eagan. Overall cost: $4.39 million.

Washington County will receive $4.4 million for a new bridge connection over Interstate 94 from Helmo Avenue in Oakdale to Bielenberg Drive in Woodbury. The bridge will include two or three lanes for general traffic, as well as a 10-foot pedestrian and bicycle lane with a buffer. Separate bus lanes to be constructed and funded through the $420 million Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit project. Overall cost: $12.6 million.
