Fire this weekend destroyed the Hong Kong Cafe, 1921 W. Superior St. in Duluth. The building, reportedly a century old, was a West End business landmark and had housed a Chinese restaurant at least as far back as the 1930s.
By the end of Spirit Mountain's fiscal year this September, the facility will have lost $1.7 million over five years. Based on its financial statements and operating budget, the ski hill could have shown a profit if it operated only during the winter months.

St. Louis County's highway maintenance workers have rejected a contract proposal and authorized their negotiating team to call a strike. The 222 members of the Highway Maintenance Division do all road maintenance on approximately 3,200 miles of county roads.
The Grant School Collaborative has failed to get funding from the state to help create a community school on the East Hillside campus. The group had applied for a $1.5 million grant to build a gymnasium and an early childhood development wing.
