Most snowmobilers are complying with the new snowmobile regulations for the BWCA, but some illegal use is occurring. The violations, which are happening in areas that were previously outside the wilderness boundaries, are noted in a recently released aerial survey.

The 11th annual Region VII American College Theater Festival will be held in Duluth Jan. 17 through 21. The festival, which is convening in Duluth for the first time, will stage four productions at UMD's Marshall Performing Arts Center.

A mild 1997-98 winter and below-average precipitation has resulted in lower water levels in the Great Lakes. The 1,000-foot lakers that visit Lake Superior ports have recently had to lighten their loads and sacrifice profits in order to safely navigate the system's shallower shipping channels.

The mid-winter fire season has begun in the Northland. At least 15 fires in the past 15 days have burned families out of their homes, with the latest occurring this week when a Duluth five-plex, a Duluth home, and a Nashwauk home all burned.
