Hermantown Mayor Helmer Ruth yesterday told the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission his city will not cooperate with Duluth in planning for developments in the Miller Trunk corridor. The commission had considered a resolution asking both cities to join in a cooperative planning process.

Duluthians can expect a four percent natural gas rate hike following the announcement of a 23 percent increase in the wholesale price. The increase will take effect Dec. 27 and comes atop an eight percent increase in Duluth Nov. 27.

Dec. 15, 1998

The Duluth City Council last night approved a 1999 operating budget that picks up the tab for federally subsidized police officers and provides more money for park maintenance. The budget includes a three percent increase in the property tax levy.

The last oceangoing vessel of 1998 is expected to leave the Duluth-Superior Harbor later this week with a load of wheat destined for Hamburg, Germany. The departure of the Cyprus-flag bulk carrier United will officially end the port's St. Lawrence Seaway navigation season.
