A person picking pine boughs in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest on Friday found a human skull, according to the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office.

The skull, found on the eastern side of the Grandview Township in Bayfield County near its border with Ashland County, is believed to have been there for “many months” based on the skeletal condition and the condition of clothing found, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Bayfield County coroner recovered the remains and is investigating the cause of death and is trying to determine the identity of the remains. Hennepin County forensic pathologists are helping with the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Foul play is not suspected, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office said the skull was found near the location where a search was conducted for a missing middle-aged man with mental health issues earlier this year and the man has not been seen or heard from since.
