‘First Ship’ winner off by 19 minutes

The Federal Weser made a winner of a Middleton, Wis., woman.

In the “First Ship Contest,” Linda Hanby of Middleton had guessed the first oceangoing vessel, or “saltie,” to arrive at the Duluth port would come in at 10:05 p.m. on April 12, according to Visit Duluth, which sponsors the contest with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.

The Federal Weser beat that by 19 minutes, passing under the Aerial Lift Bridge at 9:46 p.m. on April 12.

Hanby wins a getaway to Duluth, including a stay at the Edgewater Hotel & Waterpark, a gift card to At Sara’s Table and passes to Glensheen, the Great Lakes Aquarium, the Vista Fleet, the North Shore Scenic Railroad, the Lake Superior Zoo and the William A. Irvin.

Second-place winner Miranda Moore of Duluth also wins a getaway, courtesy of the Sheraton Hotel, Restaurant 301 and several attractions. Her guess was 10:38 p.m. on April 12.

Hanby and Moore were among 2,600 people who entered the 35th annual contest.
