One lane of a bridge over Interstate 35 at Sturgeon Lake has been closed after the bridge was struck and damaged.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported Thursday that it was not certain what hit the County Highway 46 bridge, or when; the agency was notified Thursday afternoon that the span had been damaged in a manner consistent with having been hit.

Traffic on Highway 46 is down to one lane serving both directions of traffic, with a temporary traffic signal in place, as crews assess the damage.

Drivers may encounter delays when exiting I-35 at that interchange.

It's the second bridge along I-35 in the Northland to be struck in recent weeks. The freeway bridge over State Highway 45 at Scanlon was hit by a dump truck with its bed up on Oct. 9; one lane of northbound I-35 has been closed at that span as crews inspect the damage.
