A Virginia funeral home was damaged Sunday morning when fire broke out in the basement of the building.

The Virginia Fire Department responded to a call of a structure fire at the Range Funeral Home, 911 16th St. N., at 8:41 a.m., Battalion Chief Erik Jonassen said. Crews were able to contain the fire to its room of origin in the basement. Jonassen said the building suffered "light smoke" and "minor water damage." A damage estimate was not available Sunday.

No one was in the building at the time, and no one was injured, Jonassen said. A funeral home employee who lives across the alley called 911 to report the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
