What do you do? Plan the weekly food menu by doing inventory; place the monthly food order through Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank; plan the birthday celebration for the second Wednesday of each month; collaborate with Peace Church to do a volunteer catered dinner the third Tuesday of every month; coordinate the monthly variety show with American Indian Community Housing Organization; and coordinate weekly basketball games at the YMCA.

Family: Fiancee, Sharon O’Leary, and children Gabriel Mayfield Jr., 12, Mathias Mayfield, 11, and Zenobia Mayfield, 9
Community involvement: Actor/singer with Duluth Playhouse and Renegade Theater Co.; singer with The Underground “Goody Night”; I sing at memorial ceremonies for the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial; and I helped plant 20,000 trees after Community Action Duluth received a grant for that.
Favorite place in the Northland: The beautiful hiking trails and streams
Native of the area? I’m originally from the Chicago area, and had an opportunity to study the arts and finish my basketball career here.
What do you do with your free time? I like to record and write music.
How can the Northland retain younger people? I think the Northland should create more youth-friendly environments where all youth are welcomed and inspired.
Tell us about an influential person in your life: My big brother, Clarence Mayfield. He taught me how to be a man.
What is your biggest accomplishment? Receiving this award is probably my biggest accomplishment besides becoming a father.
Name three people - dead or alive - you would like to have dinner with, and why: That would have to be my sons, Gabriel and Mathias, and my daughter, Zenobia.
